The Tyre Business

Good tyres make for a good drive. Roads are often rough and patchy in most parts of our country. Maintaining your car’s tyres can be tricky with such drastically changing terrains. The tyres are the actual parts of your car that are in physical contact with the roughness of the road. Maintaining the tyres is therefore a very important part of maintaining your car.

Not caring for your tyres can impact the performance of your vehicle and its mileage. The tyres and the rims get the most affected while traveling. Therefore, make sure you follow the below-mentioned tips and tricks to ensure a smooth driving experience and long lifespan of your car tyres.

The Right Tyre Pressure

The right tyre pressure ensures a smooth driving experience as well as increased mileage and long tyre life. You must not over-inflate it or under-inflate it. Over-inflating your car tyres can make them stiff and unyielding. It reduces traction and can lead to tyre failure. Under-inflating car tyres can lead to increased friction, lower mileage and poor car performance.

Not maintaining the right tyre pressure can not only affect the tyres but also the engine of the car because to keep the vehicle moving, it works harder. The struts and shock absorbers can also get damaged if the tyres are inflated wrongly.

The right tyre pressure varies from vehicle to vehicle. You must make sure to know the exact figure to inflate the car’s tyres.

You must always check the pressure of the tyres once a month at least, especially in cold climates. You must fill the air in your tyres if you feel the vehicle is not moving as well as you want it to. However, never overinflate.

Nitrogen Better than Regular Air?

You can expect pressure leaks to be less when you fill your car tyres with nitrogen. This is simply because of the relatively larger molecules of the nitrogen air/gas. The contraction or expansion of nitrogen is way less compared to regular compressed air. This helps maintain tyre temperature and reduces the wearing of the tyre. This not only improves the overall performance of the car but improves the life of your tyres. Also, the rims of the wheels are less susceptible to corrosion if nitrogen is used.

Tyre Balancing

Do you feel a wobbling sensation while travelling on smooth roads? Then you must check for tyre balance. This means the inner and outer sides of your car tyres have unequal weight distribution.

Tyre balancing is nothing but a tune-up for the car’s wheel-tyre set. It ensures that the weight is evenly distributed around the entire circumference of the unit. Also, tyre balancing is essential after every incident of a tyre puncture.

Wheel Alignment

You must check the alignment of the car’s wheels once in a while. This can be easily checked ensuring a car servicing. It’s a rather good idea to go for a wheel alignment check-up in case of uneven tyre wear the car pulling in a left or right direction while driving in a straight line, or if you notice any problem with your car’s suspension. Do get your wheels examined for misalignment if you have driven speedily across a speed bump, over a stone or bumped into a curb.

In general, the alignment of the wheel must be examined regularly to keep your car’s suspension, tyres and brakes in good condition and for ultimate performance.

Other Important Tyre Things

Other things you can do to keep your car tyres in good condition are:

  • Knowing your car’s load limit and not overloading your car.
  • Checking alloy wheels for any cracks or dents to minimize mishaps.
  • Ensuring wheel bolts are of the right size because they secure the wheels and that’s an important role!
  • Checking tyre tread depth with tread wear indicators to allow proper traction.
  • Rotating the tyres every 5000 km to avoid expensive replacements.

Wrapping Up

Tyres are typically made to provide you with thousands of kilometers of excellent service. For you to benefit from the maximum life of your car tyres, you must maintain them well. Maintaining car tyres is not an expensive business if done consistently and deliberately. Taking care of the small factors can go a long way in adding to the life of your car tyres, helping you avoid expensive replacements, boosting mileage, improving your driving experience and, most importantly, keeping you and others around you safe.
