Pre-owned Cars Market

Buying a car is a basic necessity for a few people, while it is a status symbol for a segment of people and a dream come true for most car owners, especially in a country like India. Whatever the reason for buying a car, a major financial decision must be made, which involves a great deal of savings and monetary planning.

We all know that the used car market in India is achieving great heights; however, people are still confused about many things regarding this concept. Several dealers out there sell used cars. Most of the paperwork is taken care of for you. However, is it the same when you buy a car directly from a car owner? Let us find out!

Buying a car from a dealership is like buying a new one from the brand's showroom. A used car dealership is a toned-down version of a new car showroom. There are several factors to consider when buying a second-hand car.

Why Buy Pre-Owned Cars?

Most often, we use the public transport system to go from one place to another. However, after the pandemic and the widespread awareness of social distancing, it is logical and only smart to invest in a personal mode of transport. It is the best option to go for a used car rather than a new one, especially if you are a beginner or a learner.

Some of the key criteria for buying a used car would be the cost, of course, and that it is sturdy, safe, easily manoeuvrable, and in good condition. There can be numerous secondary criteria like colour, design, looks, and so on, which will differ from person to person.

There are many things to know when buying a used car from a pre-owned car dealership:

Warranty:

Most pre-owned car dealers provide a warranty, which can benefit the customers. It may not be a full warranty, but it differs from dealership to dealership.

Accountability:

Trust is a major factor when it comes to purchasing a car, especially when buying a used car. Buying a car from a trustworthy source is always a better idea.

Variety and Reliability:

If you buy a car from a pre-owned car showroom, you can choose from various cars. If you buy from a direct owner, your only option is the car that the person owns.

Paperwork is easy:

If you opt to buy a car from a dealership, you will not have to break your head over the paperwork and documentation. RC transfer is a process only a few are fully aware of. You only have to sign the papers and drive away the car if you are buying from a dealership.

What to keep in mind before buying used cars?

Know the car well.

Research and study the car you are looking to buy. Learn and know everything about the car which is being sold to you – from the distance it has covered, mileage, any wear and tear, insurance coverage, any past accidents, any repairs made, and so on.

Check for faults and find none

Check the condition of the car inside out. Drive the car around to feel if there are any unwanted sounds or noises from the inside of the vehicle.

Verify the documents thoroughly.

Verifying documents like checking the warranty report, RC book details, insurance details, and perhaps the history of the car are all important steps to consider while buying a used car.

Even Before You Start

  • Go to check the car during the day, when it is bright and sunny, so that you can inspect the paint and dents properly.
  • See the car in the open to get the complete 360-degree view. This will aid you in seeing the vehicle from different angles.
  • Go for the level ground so that you can check the straight-line areas better. Uneven terrains can make spotting deformities in window panes and roof lines difficult.
  • Take a trusted mechanic along with you or a friend who knows about cars well so that you can make an informed decision whether it is a good buy or not.

How to Inspect?

  • Take a walk around – check all angles of the car – from the paint to the mirrors – check the exteriors perfectly.
  • Check for any paint difference and rust. There should not be any colour or paint differences on the car.
  • Check for underbody rust. Most often, the underbody of the car can get rusted and damaged.
  • Check for rust on the sides of the car.
  • When purchasing a car, it's important to check for any aftermarket body parts or modifications. Inspect the vehicle and ask the previous owner if they made any modifications, such as custom exhaust, air filter, bent pipes, or raised suspension. Also, be sure to thoroughly inspect any aftermarket alloys.
  • Inspect the car for major dents and repair works. Do not worry about minor dents and scratches. Any car will have minor scratches and dents after years of running. You need to look for anything major.
  • Whenever you inspect a car, it's important to pay close attention to the joints of the doors and the body. This is because a car that has undergone major repairs will either show welding marks or have a completely smooth surface without any punched holes. It's crucial to keep an eye out for these signs to ensure that the car is in good condition before making a purchase.
  • Check the make and year of the tyres.
  • Match the metallic colour under the hood.
  • Check the engine oil level. The ideal oil level should be till the second marker.
  • Check if all fluids are in place. Check for brake fluid and coolant fluid levels, along with their colour and formation.
  • Check if the belts are stress-free.
  • Check the condition of the seats. See if there are seat covers or not.
  • Examine the dials and buttons on the insides. Do not just check the AC and audio unit. Check if all the buttons are working properly.
  • Inspect all electrical equipment.
  • Check the floor for rust and tampering.
