It may be a hatchback, but the Mercedes-Benz A-class is quite substantial in size. It’s big on style too, with a decidedly youthful look. The A-class cabin is well-finished but outside visibility isn’t great, irrespective of where you might be seated in the cabin. Rear-seat room is also limited, making the A-class a car best suited for self-drive owners.
The Mercedes-Benz A-class’ 122hp, 1.6-litre petrol engine gets the job done but isn’t exciting. The 136hp, 2.1-litre diesel motor feels stronger and delivers its performance in a friendly, linear manner. Refinement is good but not at par with Merc’s latest diesel engines.
The A-class suspension has been tweaked over the years to make it more absorbent. However, there’s no escaping the firmness in the set-up; and while the car is no hot hatch, the A-class does drive with confidence.
